JUNE 2019 – NO HOT ASH in any kerbside bin
If you have a wood heater, chiminea or brazier be careful with the way you dispose of the ash.
All ash must be completely extinguished with water, as it can smoulder for days and residual coals can ignite other materials in bins causing a fire hazard in bins and collection trucks.
Cold or wet ash can be
- sprinkled between layers of compost
- sprinkled around garden plants to deter snails and other pests (just a handful here and there)
- applied to the garden – ash is alkaline so add only if the PH of your soil is higher than 7 (most plants thrive with a soil PH of between 6 and 7.5)
or disposed of in the general waste bin (blue lid) but only after it is completely extinguished and cold.
